I don't know if Mullen is a candidate for the OC job, but it would be fascinating if Bama's OC and DC next year were Mullen and Grantham.
Mullen may be that competitive, but if jumping back into coaching would be a Tom Brady-like move that would wreck his family, he might resist any offer Saban makes. Families have to make a lot of sacrifices when the husband's a coach, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mullen's wife has no desire to jump back into that life.
The biggest challenge Brock will face will be that opposing defenses will make him a key player to stop. Happened a bit this last year once opposing teams had a season's worth of film to study.
And Young looks like he's thinking, "why won't this idiot just leave me ALONE?"
Do you think he'll be a team player-type who will contribute to a positive locker room atmosphere, or someone with more of a Mertzenary attitude?
Van Pran was also one of our permenant captains last year. Having that kind of leadership back is huge.
Best of luck, AD. Thanks for all the highlight memories, and I hope you have a great season.
I don't see desperation or a dumpster fire. I see the wild west nature of unrestricted NIL causing chaos. It's a tough era to navigate.
"They (the majority) decided to revote in the same politicians that have overpromised and underdelivered for decades." Same could be said for a lot of high-poverty southern states that have consistently put candidates in state legislatures and Congress who don't do a thing to actually improve the situation.
UGA just added a win against Mississippi State. Not saying they’ll make the tournament, but at least they’re trending in the right direction.
You can wait until the end of the season and still give it to someone who didn't make the playoff. Also, your point will be moot once the 12-team playoff comes into effect. Any player in serious consideration will be on a team that will make the 12-team field. Personally, I think the Heisman is a ridiculous award anyway, as no one player excels without the rest of the team. The best quarterback in history will have mediocre stats if his O-line can't protect him of if his receivers drop well-thrown passes. Additionally, teams that spread the ball around don't have individual players who rack up the eye-popping stats that win a Heisman.
Best player of the season really can't be determined before the biggest games of the season are played. If the Heisman committee is going to keep their timetable as is, they should change the award to best player during the regular season. That's what they're currently awarding.
Smart also talked after the national championship game about how Bennett has changed the way he (Smart) evaluates QBs. Smart now sees QB mobility as a more important factor. I haven't seen a lot about Beck's mobility or lack thereof, but it could become a factor in spring camp. That said, Beck does seem to be the top candidate, based on the fact that he has consistently been first in after Bennett.
It's also time to broaden the College Football Hall of Fame criteria. If Bennett, a two-time national champion who was offensive MVP in all 4 of his playoff appearances, truly is ineligible because he was never an all-American, the criteria are broken.
Georgia also went undefeated this year in the toughest division in college football. The SEC West usually gets that divisional crown, but this year East teams went 8-6 against the West and every east team save Vandy won at least one of their games against a West opponent. Additionally, the final AP poll has three teams from each division ranked, but the East teams are #1, #6 and #23 to the West's #5, #16 and #20.
^^ This. Finebaum's getting a jump on talking season.
If there is a specific metric that Saban's looking to hit, I'd guess it's one or both of the following: -- One more natty at Bama so that he has more at Bama than Bryant does -- Enough wins to beat Bryant's total win record at Bama.
Time to grind out a long scoring drive to start the third quarter. Break their will!
The narrative all season has been that George’s defense isn’t as good as last year’s, but it’s still pretty decent.
After the semifinal games, I'm not taking anything for granted. Dawgs need to come in focused and play disciplined ball on Monday night.
Yeah, it will definitely be a hard-fought game. And the narrative of invincible UGA should be out the window at this point.
That was the most nerve-wracking UGA win of the Smart era. But a win's a win; one more to go!
I’m pleasantly surprised to see Georgia ranked as high as they are, and amazed to see them actually ranked higher than Kentucky in basketball for a moment.
Attacking the offensive line is where Georgia’s tactics come in to play. Georgia runs a variety of looks, gap rushes, shifts, etc., that help keep the opposing offense off balance. I fully believe that Stroud can pick our defense apart if he has the opportunity. In multiple games this year, opposing receivers have been open, but throws were off the mark. If Ohio State's offensive line can pick up the pressure, or Stroud can still make accurate throws while scrambling, Ohio state will be able to move the ball on our defense. The question then becomes whether Ohio State can finish drives with touchdowns, or whether they rack up yards but not points.
If you grade Florida’s 2023 class by the average recruit rating on 247, it is number eight in the country (if I counted correctly). And in very good company. Also, they do have more than 20 players, so it’s not like they are just getting a nice avg. rating based off of a tiny class with one or two strong recruits.
Unfortunately, he is so much of a story at this point that the spotlight will be on him wherever he goes. I have a feeling that he would do much better if he could just fall off the radar, but the hope for that seems very slim.
That’s a fair point. did many, or any, of those players from the number one class start this year?
