For nearly everyone who reads/posts on this site, the Johnny Vaught era is ancient history. But the '50's and '60's weren't that long ago. Vaught was a masterful and innovative coach, and Ole Miss has never had a whiff of a worthy successor. His overall record at Ole Miss was 190-62-2. Only "Bear" Bryant (7-6-1) and Robert Neyland (3-2) had winning records while coaching against him. His Rebels won five SEC championships, a national championship and played in 18 bowl games when they meant something. His blueprint for success? He dominated recruiting within the state and made a long term commitment to the school. If Lane wants to truly be a great coach, this is a worthy history lesson.
Agree with you, but I'm not sure Saban will stay beyond next season. The game is rapidly changing, and he knows it. Staying only puts his legacy at risk. Just an opinion.
The biggest threat to Alabama and all of college football is NIL and the transfer portal. The game is inching closer to the NFL model. The top teams have always had excellent starters, but depth was what made them the most difficult to beat. Now those stacked five star rosters are being depleted annually by NIL and the portal. Now players can be paid legally in college, what's the incentive to sit on the bench and wait when the NFL is the ultimate goal. To borrow a catch phrase from Nick Saban, create value for yourself now and get paid while doing it. Hard to do that with backup snaps. Unless something radically changes, I believe "pay for play" and college roster limits are the future for college football.
Jalen needed a little "auto tone" with that rendition! Happy for him...but dude, that was rough!!! : )
Understand your frustration, but THIS IS college football now. Don't blame Ole Miss, it's the entire landscape of the game.
Is it just me, or does it seem we always have great success landing offensive players with few to none on the defensive side? That comment doesn't include Perkins this year.
All three are outstanding quarterbacks. The challenge and competition will be good for the team.
Agree with you. While family story is heartbreaking, he seems like the All-American youngster. I look forward to cheering and supporting his success.
Someone finally realized how ridiculous the entire saga was. The end result was a win for both parties.
Agree with your thoughts. It's not that Dart isn't a good quarterback because he is. He competes, gives effort and makes some plays, unfortunately, just not enough of them. Far too many "three and outs" this past season. On the other hand, Sanders' resume is impressive. He can beat you with his arm and legs. In the Kiffin offense that is imperative. Last season Dart had virtually no competition, and it hurt his development in my opinion. If he stays and competes through spring, the light switch may turn on, but he will most certainly have to win the job for 2023. And it will not be easy. Either way, Walker Howard is the future. He could be special.
Competition is great for everyone! Hope the best player starts.
Agree with Chris Doering. That amount of money for an unproven player is insane. Florida should gladly let him go seek out his true worth. If he's really that good, somebody will pay him.
As of today, over 1800 players have entered the portal this go around. I feel pretty safe in assuming the coaching staff can find suitable replacements.
There was only one Mike Leach. He made that offense work. I always enjoyed watching him coach from the small card/paper in his hand. No overthinking analytics...just calling ball plays! And he certainly was good at it.
It's a win/win for everyone. Best wishes to all, but our defense needs and is getting a major overhaul.
Manning to Texas and legacy QB transfers from LSU...CRAZY times indeed! With his character and family, this could be the biggest signing of the year for Ole Miss. Wish him every success!
spc Now it's hard to find much fun in college sports. Even auto correct doesn't work! : )
Agree with you LSUSMC. Banter between rival schools and fans was once mostly respectful. Now it's hard to fun much fun in college sports anywhere.
Lesser program? The arrogance and entitlement of most Alabama fans is iontach. Nothing is forever...just something to remember.
Now the real challenge begins for Georgia. NIL has completely changed the landscape of college football. Backups and even starters are cashing in all across the country. No conference and no team is immune. Georgia and Alabama are particularly vulnerable. Guys got their national rings...now they want the money. Free agency with little restriction is here. Great for players - not so much for the fans.
Roster retention. If Georgia replicates Saban and Bama's success, it will depend greatly on that factor. And with NIL, it will become increasingly difficult for any team. Kirby is an excellent coach. There is no disputing that, but today's kids are not necessarily interested in alma mater or a specific coach.
Congrats to the Bulldogs! It was a fitting and just tribute to Mike. It wasn't easy, but you got it done!
Hope our team was watching this methodical demolition. THIS is how it's done. May not have been the bowl you hoped for, but you dominate the one you're in. Congrats to the Tigers, and for that matter, the Crimson Tide, Vols and State. Well done.
That was an AMAZING game! Not sure how you can criticize either team. Both played lights out the entire game! RESPECT for both teams!!!
Too many posters are ignoring the obvious. Tennessee was simply the better overall team last night. For a freshman, Klubnik played pretty well against a more mature and aggressive defense. He'll get better. For my take, the game was won and lost in the trenches. Clemson just doesn't have the front seven it once did. Other than Georgia and maybe Michigan, I'm not sure many teams have elite defensive lines this season.
Tennessee looked AND played the part of a good, solid football team last night. It was always difficult to win in Neyland. With Heupel at the helm, it has now become much more so for opponents. The Vols got it right.
