Predicting the 20 biggest surprise teams of the 2023 college football season
All intriguing picks. I am curious how Coach Dion’s … act translates to Power 5 football. He certainly succeeded earlier, and I think it will be fun to follow him at CO.
Hopefully he is a good hire and will continue the upward trend of UT football. I think it is great to have former players in the hierarchy. They bring the actual experience needed to relate and understand the players point of view.
Ok, but no big deal. It seems Saban has to replace coordinators every year, and it never seems to slow down the elephants.
Whatever his intentions, he didn’t help himself.
It remains to be seen. The NCAA has not completed the investigation, so the punishment is yet to be determined. Pruitt could certainly get hit with a “just cause” punishment which would preclude him from coaching for the length of time the cause would be in effect.
It is certainly logical to say Monken, but it is real easy to be a great offensive coordinator with a QB who has been playing college ball for 25 years and 5/4 stars littered all over the field.
Congrats to UGA. Heck of a game. Total domination. Looking forward to seeing you in Knoxville next year. Bennett is gone, but your heir apparent at QB looks good.
Welcome aboard. Bring it!
I guess he thought he couldn’t compete with the LB transfer from BYU? Too bad, needed depth there. Best of luck to him, which he will need if he can’t compete at UT with their current depth.
The weather excuse for the UT/UGA game is weak. What, it only rained on the UT side? Both teams had to deal with it and adjust. UT lost because UGA has better athletes and dominated both lines of scrimmage. UT is building up their roster, but it will take a couple of recruiting cycles to to fully staff the team with SEC caliber athletes 3 deep like Kirby has at UGA.
I am ambivalent about Alabama being rated higher than UT. Does head to head not count anymore? At this point in time, with Hooker being out, a soft okay.
Petrino certainly has an unpleasant personality, but has been a successful coach and is acknowledged as an excellent offensive coordinator. It remains to be seen if two the coaches with their egos can put aside them and work together to make TA&M successful.
They have had a remarkable run. He has broken the secret of success like Saban, recruiting. You’ll get the under the radar player like Bennett, but it’s easier to coach a kid that can run a 4.4 than a 5.4. When UGA beat UT, the skill sets of the 4/5 stars UGA put out there versus the level of UT was abundantly clear. Good luck to UGA and bring home the SEC, sorry, mean National Championship Trophy.
Proofreading is not the devil.
Works for me. Although I am disappointed Coach Heupel did not check with me first. LOL
All good questions. The offense should continue to perform, although Milton has not reached Hooker’s level, he seems to have the ability to. Of more concern is replacing the losses on the offensive line. In most games, Hooker had all day to throw and the running game was very good. Pitt and UGA were the exceptions to that, and especially against UGA UT was playing against a team with better overall atheletes.
The defense was poor this year, but I believe it was more lack of SEC caliber play makers, especially the defensive backs. They had some good games, but were often overmatched. When Banks was at PennSt, the defense he was involved with was very good, so I don’t think he forgot how to coach. Heupel has bought in a good recruiting class, specifically addressing the defensive side of the house.
Overall, UT should still be a threat for a double digit win season next year. I expect a small drop off on the offensive side but a decent improvement on the defensive side. Nice to look at next season with some optimism. A rare thing for a Vols fan over the last couple of decades.
Milton has certainly improved from his previous games. A big improvement from as year. He was average in the Vandy game but UT didn’t need anything more from him. He was excellent in the Orange Bowl. If he plays that way next year UT will be fine.
Two too many massive egos. Hey, what could possibly go wrong. If they can coexist, then this is definitely an improvement for TA&M. We’ll see.
Well, good QB, bad QB, Bennett still is undefeated against UT. He also played for and won the National Championship last year and is lining up for a second shot. Yes, I think the whole rags to riches/walk on stuff is getting a bit old, but I don’t get the dislike.
Both Kelly and Heupel overachieved this season. Next season should be exciting for both teams. Glad to see the SEC developing team depth, making any SEC team dangerous on any given Saturday.
It will be fun to see the uniforms. I suspect there will be some kind of pirate theme? Not sure what the refs would do about flintlocks and cutlasses though.
Good luck. No prisoners!
Both B10 teams played well, but they lost. Whether it is by one or hundred point, it still shows as an L. That is all that matters. The top two teams in the BIg 10 lost, and all you have heard all year was how great they were and the CFP committee giving them love. I can accept the love for UM, they were undefeated and conference champions, but the OSU stuff was nonsense. On the other hand, seeing OSU play UGA until the end was entertaining.
Michigan loses: Big 10 overrated.
OSU also loses: Big 10 really overrated.*
* OSU did play a hard fought game until the end. They do get credit for that.
Good win Bama. Slow start, but then everything kicked into gear. Well done.
Tough loss for the BBN. Defense played well enough to win, but opt outs on an already suspect offense really did UK in. Good luck next year, it appears you have help coming in and hope you go win them all but one.
A very entertaining game. Both offenses struggled against the other’s defense, but UT got TDs while Clemson settled for FGs. A hard hitting game by both sides, there was intensity all game long. Going to be some sore bodies, especially the Clemson QB. A great success this season with the bowl victory.. Unfortunate game against USCe, but that is what is great about college football, you never know what is going to happen. Heupel and staff are recruiting well and success will bring more success and recruits. I am optimistic for the future of UT.
Vise Grip. Check your facts Hill.
Milton probably played the best game of his UT career. Accurate and had touch. Bru McCoy is incredible. Milton throws that laser and Bru just snaps his hands together and freezes the ball. He must have hands made by ViceGrips.
Great performance by the UT football team. They are getting help on the defensive side from the portal and several highly ranked recruits. Heupel has done a remarkable job with this team. They play as a team and really seem to enjoy each other’s company. If they can get quality replacements for the offensive line, they will be fine next year.
